Abingdon-Avon outscored Eureka in every quarter to advance to the quarterfinals of the Macomb-Western Holiday Tournament by the final count of 41-28. The victory ended an eight-game losing streak in first round games for Abingdon, and it was the first such victory for the A-Town consolidation in five tries.

The Eureka Hornets (3-6) gave the Tornadoes (7-2) a run, especially in the first half. Eureka trailed by just four points (20-16) at the break despite cold shooting. After A-Town grabbed a 5-2 lead, the Tornadoes’ advantage bounced back-and-forth from three to one 14 times before intermission.

A-Town finally took charge in the third quarter by establishing a post presence with Ryan Adolphson and Calen Mahr. The Tornadoes scored three baskets off offensive rebounds as well in the third to open a 29-20 advantage that proved to be insurmountable for Eureka.

The A-Town lead eventually swelled to 14 with just under three minutes to play following a 13-5 run. The Tornadoes controlled the game defensively, holding the Hornets to 29 percent shooting (12-for-41) and 0-for-8 on three-point attempts. The were led by Adolphson’s 10 points and seven boards. Hunter Darst grabbed seven caroms from the guard position helping A-Town to a 30-22 rebounding edge.

Eureka was led by Keegan Zimmerman with seven points and four rebounds and Jake Bachman with six points, five boards, and three steals.

Eureka will face off with Rockridge at 9:00 am in the consolation bracket on Friday, while A-Town will get a rematch with unbeaten Farmington at 5:00 pm in the quarterfinals. Farmington downed A-Town 61-40 in Abingdon on December 1.
