Lane Ippensen had four chances to win Thursday’s first round
game of the Macomb-Western Holiday Tournament for Camp Point
Central. He only needed one.
With the game tied after the regulation
horn at 41, Jacksonville Crimsons head coach Cody Gray was
assessed two technical fouls. Ippensen, who had swatted
Jacksonville’s last second shot to win the game only moments
earlier for his sixth block of the game, stepped to the line and
ended the drama as quickly as possible.
Ippensen’s six rejections were part of a
superb defensive effort by the Panthers (6-4), who held the
Crimsons (1-10) to 33 percent (14-for-42) from the field.
The game ended almost as strangely as it
started. Jacksonville, making it’s first appearance at Western
Hall since 1983, was handed an administrative technical before
the game started for not having the team roster available in
Will Peak brought the Crimsons back,
however, hitting back-to-back three-pointers and scoring eight
points in the opening quarter. Jacksonville led 14-13 after the
first quarter, but trailed 23-20 at halftime.
Peak went on to score 23 points in the
game, including a jumper with 35 seconds to play to put
Jacksonville ahead 41-39. The Crimsons enjoyed a 30-23
rebounding advantage thanks in large part to Zack Rose, who led
all players with eight boards.
Down 33-30 entering the final quarter,
Central rallied back with six points to begin the fourth. Bryce
Long dropped four points in the first two minutes to put the
Panthers ahead 36-33. After Jacksonville responded with a 8-3
burst, Long recovered a loose ball under the Jacksonville basket
and tied the game with his third field goal of the quarter with
12 seconds to go.
Central advances to take on the winner of fourth seeded
Monmouth-Roseville and Liberty at 6:30 on Friday. Jacksonville
will square off with the loser of that game at 10:30 am in the
