The Brown County Hornets shot a sizzling 62 percent from the field to drop the Illini West Chargers 56-46 in the final game of the first round of the Macomb-Western Holiday Tournament. The victory ended an eight-game losing streak for the Hornets in first round play.

Brown County (8-1) made eight out of ten field goal attempts in the opening quarter to race out to a 22-11 lead. Darian Drake was the star for the Hornets, tallying nine points in the first eight minutes.

Brown County ended the quarter on a 19-4 run, and things did not get much better for Illini West (5-6) in the second period. Joe Hendricker buried a three with 4:14 left in the half to close a 30-9 run for the Hornets.

Drake added to the Brown County lead, making it 18 to begin the second half, but the Chargers would make a game out of it. Carter Boyer who recorded the only double-double on the first day of the tournament, scored seven points in the third quarter to get his team within ten.

Boyer banked in a lay up to begin the fourth, trimming the deficit to eight, but IW would get no closer. Drake finished with 19 points, four assists and three steals, while Tanner Sussenbach netted 17 points and nine board to lead Brown County.

Kennedy Gooding scored 19 points on 9-for-16 shooting and Boyer registered 11 rebounds to lead Illini West.

The Chargers will take on Pittsfield at 2:30 pm in the consolation bracket play on Friday, while Brown County advances to challenge top seeded West Hancock in the nightcap of the quarterfinal round at 9:30 pm.
