The Abingdon-Avon Tornadoes knocked the second seeded Farmington Farmers from the ranks of the unbeaten, 40-33, reaching the semifinals of the Macomb-Western Holiday Tournament for the first time as the A-Town consolidation. The last time Abingdon reached the semis was in 2007.

The Tornadoes (8-2) fell to Farmington (11-1) 61-40 earlier this month, but it was spirited end to the first half that made sure a repeat performance would not be in order. Farmington held a 12-8 lead late in the opening frame, but went ice cold for the rest of the half. The Farmers could manage just one field goal over the final nine minutes of the half as A-Town outscored them 16-2 for a 24-14 halftime lead.

Abingdon-Avon handed away 13 turnovers in the first half, but more than made up for it by shooting 71 percent (10-for-14) from the field.

Farmington continued to be frustrated by the smothering A-Town defense in the third quarter. The Tornadoes allowed just four points over the first seven minutes after the break as A-Town’s advantage increased to 16 points at 34-18. Ryan Adolphson and Calen Mahr combined for 10 points in the third quarter for A-Town.

Farmington dialed up the pressure in the final quarter, forcing eight A-Town turnovers. Farmington blanked the Tornadoes for almost seven minutes, scoring the first 10 points of the quarter to climb within 36-33.

A-Town, which gained a 26-14 advantage in points in the paint, finally hit Mahr and Adolphson inside against a gambling Farmington defense to push the lead back to its final margin of seven. Farmington misfired on three shots behind the arc down the stretch in an attempt to get closer.

A-Town shot 59 percent for the game, overcoming 24 turnovers. Hunter Darst and Ryan Adolphson each had nine points and eight rebounds in the victorious effort. The Tornadoes will take on the winner of Monmouth-Roseville and Central tomorrow at 1:00 in the semifinal round.

Farmington’s Jaden Rutledge led all players in the game with 11 points. Jakob Uryasz tallied 10. The Farmers will come back Saturday at 9:00 am for a game against either Monmouth-Roseville or Central.
