A 37-25 rebounding advantage propelled
the West Hancock Titans past the Brown County Hornets 47-41 in
the nightcap of quarterfinal action of the Macomb-Western
Holiday Tournament. The Titans earn their third semifinal
appearance in 10 years of competition since the West Hancock
co-op began play in 2008.
West Hancock (13-0) never trailed in the
game, scoring the first six points en route to a 11-4 lead after
the first quarter. Thing got worse before the got better for
Brown County (8-2). The Titans made four of their first six
shots in the second quarter to increase their lead to 19-5.
Tanner Sussenbach and Darian Drake
finally gave the Hornets and their fans some hope, combining for
eight points in the final four minutes of the first half to pull
Brown County to within 21-13 at intermission.
Somehow, despite shooting 21 percent
(5-for-21) in the first half against the No. 1 seed, the Hornets
were still in the game. Twice in the third quarter Brown County
trimmed the deficit to five before Sussenbach followed his own
miss with a put-back lay up to make the score 28-25 with just
under two minutes left in the third.
It took 28 minutes of play, but Jonah
Farve hit the first, and only three-pointer of the game in the
corner off a feed from Sussenbach with 2:51 remaining in the
game to again bring Brown County within three at 37-34.
Disaster struck for the Hornets on the
next possession as Logan Dorethy of West Hancock put back his
own miss and was fouled on the play. He missed the foul shot,
but Drake Hammel grabbed the offensive rebound and hit Dorethy
for another bucket to push the lead back to 41-34.
The Hornets again showed their heart and
determination, fighting back against the clock to close within
two points on two separate occasions. Both times, however,
Hammel responded on the other end with two points to deny Brown
County a chance to tie or take the lead.
Sussenbach saved 10 of his team-high 18
points for the fourth quarter, in addition to his 15 rebounds.
Farve and Drake scored nine and eight points respectively.
Dorethy tallied 20 points and 13 boards
to lead West Hancock. Hammel scored 11. The teams combined to
shoot just 1-for-21 from behind the arc.
West Hancock will take on No. 4 seed Illini Bluffs in the
semifinals at 2:30 pm Saturday. Brown County will play Macomb at
