Trevor Heffren shot 12-23 from the field and scored 27 points to lead the Eureka Hornets (5-8) to a victory over the Panthers of Camp Point Central (1-11) in the second round of the Consolation bracket. Camp Point outscored Eureka 15-3 in the third quarter to take the lead, but Eureka charged back to take the decisive fourth quarter to advance. Points in the paint was the story in this contest, as the Hornets won that battle 34-20. Eureka also dominated second chance points 16-2. Faced with a 31-21 halftime deficit, the Panthers went to work in the third. After a 15-3 quarter, Camp Point led 36-34. Eureka had their largest quarter of the tournament and outscored Camp Pt 24-10 in the final frame. Eureka was led by Heffren’s aforementioned 27 points. Two Hornets players scored nine points each (Aden Sears and Matt Martin). Sears also tied for the team lead with nine rebounds with teammate Sterling Spencer. Martin dished five assists to lead his team. Eureka also shot 5-6 (83%) from the free throw line. Rebounds were also won by the Hornets by a count of 35-18. Camp Point Central’s attack was fronted by Peyton Clampitt’s 16 points and four assists. Josh Alford had a team-high four rebounds. Dominic Williams swiped three steals. Eureka advances to the “Battle of the Hornets” in Game 17 (tomorrow, 9:00am in WIU’s Brophy Hall) where they will face the Hornets of Brown County.
