It wasn’t a Saukee dominated contest like the final score may indicate, but Pittsfield got the job done against a scrappy Abingdon-Avon Tornadoes team, 62-36, in Game 11 of the 2022 Macomb Western Holiday Tournament. It looked like the Saukees might run away with it as they started the game on an 8-0 run and forced a Tornadoes timeout halfway through the first quarter. However, A-Town clawed their way back, cutting the Pittsfield lead to just six at one point in the second quarter. The Saukees refused to take their foot off the gas and increased their lead to double digits, 24-14, going into the halftime break.
The third quarter provided much of the same entertainment as the first half, with the Tornadoes fighting back against the Saukees. Pittsfield led 37-28 going into the fourth quarter. The Saukees floored it to the finish line, going on a 15-0 run in the first three and a half minutes of the fourth quarter. In fact, Pittsfield outscored A-Town 25-8 in the fourth quarter on a 9-of-12 shooting clip.
The game featured five double digit scorers. Three of those players were wearing red: Adam Musgrave with 15 points, Javan Petty with 14, and Brennan Tomhave with 13 points and a game-high four assists. Eli Mendenhall provided a valuable spark off the Saukee bench, scoring all six of his points and assisting three buckets in the second half alone.
For the Tornadoes, Drey Anderson came off the bench and poured in 11 points on a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor. Weston Marler contributed 10 points and eight rebounds in a near double-double performance.
Pittsfield (6-5 on the season) advances into the semi finals of the consolation bracket, Game 18, and will face the winner of Game 12 (Illini West vs. Brown County). That game is scheduled for 10:30 am inside Brophy Hall. A-Town (0-13 on the season) has been eliminated from the tournament.
