The night cap of the first day of the 2022 MWHT was enthralling early on, but the Farmington Farmers proved to be dominant down the stretch, defeating the Brown County Hornets in Game 8 by a score of 53-37. It was a back and forth affair early, with neither team gaining more than a one possession lead in the first quarter. An 11-1 run in the middle of the second quarter gave the Farmers their first double digit advantage, 21-11. The Hornets would not go into halftime easy, cutting their deficit to five before a three from Keauntrey Barnes and a free throw gave the Farmers a 25-18 lead heading into the break.
The Farmers came out of halftime on fire, starting the half on a 7-0 run, which included an impressive one-handed fastbreak slam courtesy of Keauntrey Barnes. A buzzer beater three from Logan Morse to end the third quarter gave the Farmers a 45-31 lead. Despite valiant efforts from the Hornets, the Farmers maintained a double digit lead throughout the second half.
Keauntrey Barnes and Logan Morse of Farmington were two of four double digit scorers in the contest, each ending the night with 17 points. Barnes and Morse finished a combined 14-of-26 (53.8%) from the floor. Additionally, Barnes led the game with eight rebounds, four of those coming on the offensive end.
For the Hornets, Cole Behymer finished with 15 points while Sam Carr contributed 11 points and six rebounds.
Farmington advances to the quarterfinal to face #3 seeded Eureka in Wednesday’s final contest, Game 16, with tipoff scheduled for 9:30 pm. Brown County falls into the consolation bracket and into Game 12 versus Illini West. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 2:30 pm inside Western Hall.
