Day 2 of the Macomb-Western Holiday Tournament was kicked off with a victory by the Titans of Monmouth-Roseville over the Eagles of Liberty by a score of 49-17. The Titans got out to an early lead, ahead of Liberty by a score of 12-2 after the first quarter. Unfortunately for Liberty, it was much of the same in the second quarter, as Monmouth-Roseville led 27-5 at the break. Liberty’s hopes for a comeback were dashed as a running clock sped up the fourth quarter. On a positive note for the Eagles, they did outscore the Titans 7-5 in the final period.
Monmouth-Roseville was led in scoring by Jerome Jackson’s nine points. Two other Titans (CJ Johnson and Nick Lewis-Bresnahan) were tied with eight points each. Johnson had a team-high in both rebounds (eight) and assists (four) while Darrion Smith added in six points and seven rebounds off the bench. Leo Mahoney poked away a game-high three steals, also off the bench. James Blackman swatted the only two blocks registered in the contest.
Liberty’s leading scorer was Noah Klauser, who provided six points. Levi Hoener added another five points. Wil Maas led his team in rebounds by securing eight boards. Liberty shot just 2-of-15 (13%) from the floor in the first half, but they did double that percentage in the second half.
Monmouth-Roseville advances in the consolation bracket to play in Game 17 at 9:00am on Friday morning. The Titans will play the winner of Canton/Lewistown. Liberty has been eliminated from the tournament.
