2024 Game 1 Recap: Illini West 48, Brown County 39

In the kickoff game of the 2024 Macomb-Western Holiday Tournament, the Illini West Chargers defeated the Brown County Hornets in a close game, 48-39.  Efficiency in shooting field goals was the difference in this close matchup, as the Chargers shot 46.3% from the floor, compared to the Hornets’ 28.6%.

Illini West’s attack was led by its only double-digit scorer, as Wesley Robertson finished with 14 points.  The rest of the Chargers’ remaining 34 points were split by six players who scored between four and eight points each.  Stephen Sparks had a team-high eight rebounds and Robertson pulled down seven rebounds.  Ethan Carlisle and Robertson each had four steals.  Carlisle, Ty Neiderman, and Myles Wear all tied for the team-high with three assists.

Brown County’s leading scorer was Bradley Markert’s 11 points.  Drew Markert finished with a game-high 10 rebounds and Jackson McNeff had five rebounds.  Carter Havens led both teams with four assists.  The Hornets did outscore the Chargers in bench scoring, 24-9.

Illini West (9-3) advances to the quarterfinals to face 3rd seeded Rockridge in Game 13, Friday afternoon at 4:00pm.  Brown County (7-3) falls to the consolation bracket, where they will play Camp Point Central in Friday’s first game, Game 9, at 9:00am.
