The second game in the 5th place bracket got off to a close start, as the Eureka Hornets took a six point lead into halftime against the Mercer County Golden Eagles. Head Coach Aaron Dohner must’ve had the right mix of motivation in the halftime talk, because his Hornets dominated the third quarter to the tune of 15-2. In the end, Eureka took a 60-39 victory from Mercer County.
Despite scoring 60 total points, Eureka only had one player in double figures: Brock Monk’s 12 points. Cohen Alstat and Jack Blunier each finished with nine points and Cooper Peterson added seven. A total of 10 players got into the scoring column for the Hornets. Peterson led the game with six rebounds and three players (Alstat, Monk, and Connell Roth) each grabbed four rebounds. Roth led his team by dishing three assists. Teagan McLaughlin had a game-high two steals off the bench. Eureka won the battle in the paint by a score of 22-14.
Mercer County’s Golden Eagles was led in scoring by Brady McPeek’s 14 points. Carson Boelens had 10 points and Liam Murphy finished with nine. McPeek and Boelens led the team with five rebounds each. Holden Demuth had a game-high four assists.
Eureka advances to the 5th place game, Game 24, at 5:30pm later today. Mercer County’s tournament debut comes to an end.
