Mercer County entered the 2024 Macomb-Western Holiday Tournament as a newcomer, but their first game made them look anything but as they cruised to a 64-36 win over the Pittsfield Saukees. The Golden Eagles shot an other-worldly 72.7% from the floor, nearly upsetting a single-game field goal percentage record that has stood for 43 years. Jacksonville set the current field goal shooting record of 75% all the way back in 1981 (a year before this Webmaster was even born). The rest of the counting stats look similar, but if you’re the Pittsfield Saukees, what can you do when your opponent doesn’t miss?
MerCo had three scorers in double figures: Carson Boelens with 23 points, Brady McPeek finished with 14, and Lincoln Scott added in 10. Boelens shot 10/12 from the floor and also had a game-high 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Brady McPeek grabbed five rebounds of his own. McPeel and Tobey Finley each had a team-high three assists.
Pittsfield was led by Taylor Graham’s 13 points. Carter Frazier led the team with four rebounds. Hayden Gratton led the Saukees with three assists and two steals. Pittsfield had an identical 12 turnovers to Mercer County, but lost the points-off-turnovers battle 10-to-19.
Mercer County (7-6) advances to the quarterfinals to face the winner of the Macomb/Canton game. They will play in Game 15, Friday night at 7:00pm. Pittsfield (5-5) will play the loser of that same Macomb/Canton game, Friday at Noon in Game 11.
