The Liberty Eagles outlasted the Panthers of Camp Point Central 44-42 in overtime in round 2 of the Macomb-Western Holiday Tournament. This was the third time already this season that these two teams have met. In the first two contests, each team earned a win. On November 24th, Liberty won 59-49. When the teams met again on December 3rd, the Panthers returned the favor with a 57-53 win. So to say each team had something they wanted to prove would be an understatement.
This game could best be described as an inside-and-out affair. Liberty liked the “inside” (they won the point-in-the-paint battle 32-12 and the rebounding totals 24-19)…and Camp Pt Central liked the “outside” (9-of-19 from beyond the arc and 13 assists for their 16 field goals). The lead changed eight times in this back-and-forth tilt. In the end, a single dunk by Liberty’s Logan Robbins was the only scoring done in the overtime period.
Liberty was led in scoring by Logan Robbins, who scored 17 points off the bench, including 7-for-8 shooting from the floor. He also had three blocks. Robbins appeared to injure his ankle or foot during the overtime period…and Liberty would certainly miss him if he was unable to return tomorrow. The Eagles also got seven points each from Breiton Klingele and Cannen Wolf. Klingele led his team with five rebounds.
Camp Pt Central’s Panthers had Nick Moore lead their scoring attack with 14 points, which included 4-of-7 from three point land. Drew Paben added nine points after he went a perfect 3-for-3 beyond the arc. Isaac Genenbacher led the game with 10 rebounds and an impressive six steals.
Liberty advances to the semifinals to face the winner of the Farmington/Rockridge game. That will be Game 21, held at 1:00pm Wednesday. The Panthers will move to Game 19 at 9:00am Wednesday and await the loser of Farmington/Rockridge.
