In their first MWHT game back, the #2 seeded Southeastern Suns won a defensive-minded, limited possession affair against the Abingdon-Avon Tornadoes by a score of 41-29. With a trio of three pointers from sophomore Griffin Tippey against the A-town zone defense, the Suns went up 11-5 at the conclusion of the first quarter. Danny Stephens, the high-profile University of Missouri commit, went scoreless in the first quarter before burying four buckets from the floor in the second quarter to give the Suns a 21-11 lead going into halftime.
The Tornadoes cut the deficit to single digits several times in the third quarter before the Suns hit two triples in the final minute of the third quarter to take a 35-20 lead heading into the final eight minutes. Southeastern continued to suppress A-Town’s comeback attempts in the fourth quarter as the Suns ultimately proved to be victorious by 11 points.
Danny Stephens of Southeastern was one rebound shy of a double-double as he led the game with 17 points and nine boards. Stephens was the only player who racked up a double digit point total, as Griffin Tippey and Mason Fry had nine and eight points for the Suns, respectively.
Kellen Hook and Asa Stegall led the Tornadoes with eight points a piece, as Weston Marler had a team high five rebounds, three of those coming on the offensive end.
Southeastern improves to an undefeated 11-0 on the season, while A-Town is still searching for their first victory with a 0-12 record. Southeastern will face off with the winner of Game 6 in tomorrow’s Game 15. That game is scheduled for an 8:00 pm tipoff. The Tornadoes fall to the consolation bracket, where they will contest the losing team from Game 6.
